My new printer arrived, a Brother 2070n that I described earlier. I plugged it into the wall, and plugged it into my modem. Then I set up my computer to print to that IP address, and presto I was done. The time from when I opened the amazon.com box to when it was fully working to the point where I could print out a test page from my laptop wirelessly was about 5 minutes. I don’t even think that the crappy Canon inkjet I replaced would have even finished printing the first page in 5 minutes, plus there’s all the fiddling with USB cables and crap too.
The time from when I hit print to when I get a page printed at 600 dpi resolution is less than 10 seconds. Brother even ships packages for Debian Linux *that work* — you download, double click, and it’s installed all in under 30 seconds. No crappy proprietary software, just the driver and it integrates perfectly with the built in printing systems for Ubuntu. The future is now!
This printer cost me $109. Why the heck doesn’t everyone have one of these?

Remember? Brother printers rule. I’m still using my old HL-720, and it works great… though when the drum unit finally goes, I’ll replace it with one like yours.
There’s a long weekend coming up – are you going to be around your home in Seattle? I’m thinking about visiting the land of opportunity.

Joey: It would be awesome to have you visit, but on Saturday we’re flying to Mexico for a week. Frigging timing!

Joey: Oh, and yeah I totally remember that printer too, it was pretty sweet. I destroyed mine though in one of my many many moves, some time ago. Should have clued in though instead of going through a series of crappy inkjets.

I would buy that printer, but long ago I was burned by brothers ’support’. But shit, for $109, I’m tempted to be burned again.
How fast does it print?
What do replacement cartirges cost?
Am I really so lazy as to type these questions into your blog when I could just as easily type them into google?
(hint, one of these questions can be answered with “yes”)

I’ll have to see if the old USB printer (also a Brother) that I got from my dad actually works. He suggested that the rollers might need some work, which probably means I’ll end up putting it out by the corner.
Speaking of which, does anybody want to buy a non-working HP Laserjet IIP?

johen: It prints very fast. I am not sure how to quantify this on my own without wasting paper and toner but I think they said 20 ppm in the ad copy. official toner and drums are 60/90, generic replacements are 30/60.
skippy: networked printing rules uber alles. toss that USB crap in the grabage where it belongs!

I have one of those. It’s a very nice printer. I recommended it to my family.
This is actually the first printer that I’ve ever owned. I refused to buy a worthless POS inkjet on principle; 5c/page cost of printing? WTF?!
