I was watching “The O.C.” (Natsuki got me hooked, and now I can’t stop, so that’s my excuse… let the booting begin), and I noticed that the protagonist, Seth, had a Rockstar Games logo on the wall of his room. This seemed like an odd product placement to me, odd in both the sense of the character (no one puts game companies’ corporate logos on the wall) and for the company (is this kind of branding actually worth it?)
Or is this exactly what Rockstar was hoping for – a truly post-postmodern branding exercise? Their purpose was to have people critically discuss their logo placement years later on a blog after watching the show on DVD.
My other comment about The O.C. reflects the casting problems similar to those that plagued another California “teen” classic – Beverly Hills 90210. Luke Perry was never convincing as a teenager, even 20 years ago when he actually was one, and The O.C. has the same problem; the actors playing 17 year-olds are several years beyond that. I had to check IMDB just to find out how old the actor playing Marissa’s boyfriend Luke was (he was 22 or 23 when the show was filmed). But what shocked me was that the guys playing the other roles were even older than he was, and that the only actual teenager on the show was the girl who plays Marissa.

Anywho…
